The Bassett Research Institute (BRI) at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY is seeking applicants to fill the position of Research Scientist and Director of the BRI. Organization Description: 

BRI's research scientists are involved in a range of projects to advance knowledge in the fields of rural health and clinical medicine. The BRI also supports Bassett clinicians, residents and medical students in academic, intellectual and clinical research endeavors.

The BRI is housed primarily at the Bassett Medical Center, the main campus of Bassett Healthcare Network (BHN), located in Cooperstown, NY. This is a vibrant and sophisticated upstate community set in a bucolic lakefront village affording four seasons of cultural and outdoor activity, including a well-appointed community sports center.

Job Summary

The Director will support day to day and long-term operations of the BRI, leading research staff within the four centers of the BRI: Center for Rural Community Health, Center for Clinical Research, Center for Biostatistics, and Center for the Evaluation of Rural Interventions. In addition, the director will support Bassett clinicians, fellows, residents and medical students in academic, intellectual and clinical research endeavors.

Responsibilities

The Director will be responsible for representing and supporting research interests within Bassett Healthcare Network; leading research efforts by determining priorities in consultation with BRI faculty and the Chief Clinical & Academic Officer; work closely with the Administrative Director and Office of Sponsored Programs to assure fiscal integrity of the BRI, appropriate budgeting and planning for personnel, equipment and space activities for research activities; support and encourage Bassett scientists in their efforts to compete for external funding; seek opportunities collaborate with scientists at Columbia, Cornell, and other academic institutions; and participate in Bassett's Executive Management Team, representing Bassett's research community.

  • Salary Range: $200,000 - $350,000 plus performance-based compensation. This compensation range represents Bassett Healthcare’s good faith belief of the compensation range at the time of this posting or advertisement. Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards.

Job Requirements

  • The successful candidate should possess a medical degree (MD) or PhD, with a minimum of 10 years of independent research experience with both historical and current federal or private funding of research projects as a Principal Investigator in clinical, mental health and/or public health research. We particularly encourage applicants with experience in addressing rural health disparities, rural health care services, and the social determinants of health.
  • The candidate should have demonstrated ability to build effective collaborations and collaborate productively with local agencies, state or regional entities and academic partners. S/he should have demonstrated ability and interest in effectively mentoring junior colleagues and strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and experience using Microsoft Office software (including Excel) is required. Experience with SAS, GIS software and mapping techniques is desirable
